Game Changing Technologies, Transforming Alberta’s Oil Sands
At 10 a.m. MDT on May 8, ERA CEO Steve MacDonald joined Shannon Phillips, the Minister of Environment and Parks and the Minister Responsible for Climate Change, to announce funding for nine projects from the ERA Oil Sands Innovation Challenge.
In 2017, we launched our Oil Sands Innovation Challenge to accelerate the deployment of transformative technology that will enhance the competitiveness of Alberta’s oil sands industry. ERA has committed up to $70.6 million in funding toward the projects estimated to result in potential greenhouse gas emissions reductions of up to 4 megatonnes of annual CO2e reductions in Alberta by 2030.
Alberta is taking action to be recognized as the world’s most progressive and forward-looking energy producer. Today, the oil sands sector emits roughly 70 megatonnes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) each year, accounting for roughly 1/4 of Alberta’s annual emissions.
The need to do better is not just environmental—Alberta’s industry has to continually find innovative ways to remain competitive in a global, low-carbon commodity market.
Nine projects have been selected for funding:
MEG Energy
eMVAPEX Pilot, Phase 3
Cenovus Energy Inc.
FSG Field Prototype
Suncor Energy Inc.
High Temperature Membranes for SAGD Produced Water Treatment
ConocoPhillips Canada
Non-Condensable Gas Co-Injection for Thief Zones
Heavy Oil Solutions and Cenovus Energy Inc.
Partial Upgrader with Integrated Water Treatment
Enlighten Innovations Inc. (Formerly Field Upgrading)
CLEANSEAS™ Demonstration Project
Canadian Natural Resources
Limited In-Pit Extraction Process
Imperial
Enhanced Bitumen Recovery Technology Pilot
Please note, since the announcement, one project has withdrawn. We are now providing eight projects with more than $60 million in support. The projects have a combined total value estimated at over $689 million.
