Many Alberta municipalities are working toward solutions to address challenges associated with landfills. This project investigated the effectiveness of a solution proposed by TetraTech, that intended to reduce GHG emissions by taking a new approach to landfill covers. This project demonstrated the effectiveness of Evapotranspirative-Landfill Biocover (ETLBC) technology in Alberta, which is a hybrid of landfill biocover (LBC) technology to mitigate fugitive methane emissions from landfills, and evapotranspiration (ET) as an alternative to the traditional approach of using low permeable barrier(clay) covers. The approach is superior to today’s traditional low-permeability cover systems and, to test it out, ERA supported a pilot scale demonstration of the technology in Leduc, Alberta.
