ACTION will establish how an efficient infrastructure, connecting CO2 sources with CO2 geological storage and non-geological utilisation options, can be developed as part of regional decarbonization efforts. It will research and develop a multitemporal integrated assessment model that will support stakeholders in the planning and designing large-scale, flexible CO2 transport, utilization, and storage networks, and enable reporting on decarbonization efforts. The term ‘multitemporal’ refers to time scales from hours or days, related to network operability with variable CO2 supply rates, to years, related to network evolution in response to changes in supply and the development of new storage sites, and finally to decades, related to long-term decarbonization targets. The assessment model will address geological and engineering constraints, the impact of economic conditions and regulatory environment, as well as the unavoidable uncertainties in defining them. Complex subsurface and engineering features and processes, such as geological flow barriers, geomechanical constraints and well performance, will be implemented as modular computationally independent proxy models to provide the building blocks for an integrated model.
