About the funding announcement

On July 12, 2024, Minister Rebecca Schulz will announce a $44.4 million investment in 21 technology projects from small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The projects are worth a combined $162.7 million in public and private investment.

The most recent funding from the Emerging Innovators Challenge will support the following initiatives:

  • Piloting a method to monitor wildfire impacts and detect methane leaks from space;
  • Developing a pre-treatment method for oil sands process-affected water;
  • Demonstrating a new technology to recycle plastics;
  • Advancing digital solutions for energy efficiency;
  • Building a novel facility to remove containments from soil, and more.

If successful, these projects are estimated to deliver annual greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions of 217 thousand tonnes, cumulative reductions of over 1.2 million tonnes by 2030, and 5 million tonnes by 2050. This funding is also expected to create 879 person-year jobs in Alberta and have a $238 million GDP impact in the province by 2027. Funding amounts per project range from $250 thousand to $5 million.
