On April 23, 2024, at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention, Premier Danielle Smith announced a $57 million investment in 28 hydrogen projects through ERA and Alberta Innovates.

ERA, with funding from the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund, is committing $34.5 million for eight late-stage projects through its Accelerating Hydrogen Challenge.

Alberta Innovates, in partnership with Natural Resources Canada, is committing $22.5 million for 20 early-stage projects through the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence – Competition 2.

The most recent funding from the Accelerating Hydrogen Challenge will support the following initiatives:

  • Scaling-up and deploying hydrogen storage, compression, and blending equipment at an existing compressed natural gas hub.
  • Installing hydrogen production, distribution, and refueling infrastructure for heavy duty vehicles in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan.
  • Establishing a hydrogen-fueled combined heat and power (CHP) system to provide heat and power at the Millennium Place Recreation Centre.

If successful, these projects are estimated to deliver annual greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions of 13 thousand tonnes, cumulative reductions of over 83 thousand tonnes by 2030, and 493 thousand tonnes by 2050. This funding is also expected to create over 722 person-year jobs in Alberta and have a $210 million GDP impact in the province by 2027. Funding amounts per project range from $1.2 million to $7 million.
